Lampman Chapel

Lampman Chapel, a smaller, more intimate space, is available to the seminary community around the clock for meditation and prayer. Students and staff organize a variety of worship services on a regular basis throughout the week, supplementing the larger services of James Chapel.

Gregorian Chant Vespers

Wednesdays, 5:30 p.m.
Sung by the Women’s Schola Cantorum
Directed by Mim Warden

212-262-8408

Union Theological Seminary’s Schola Cantorum (“school of singing”) chants Vespers once a week, using the modern English of the Book of Common Prayer set to traditional Gregorian chant. Scripture lessons are chanted from Inclusive Lectionary Texts.

The center of Vespers is the chanting of the Psalms, originally composed as texts to be sung. Week by week, the Schola sings its way through the 150 psalms (with some digressions for the liturgical calendar). Doing so has been an opportunity to become more and more familiar with the extraordinary range of experiences, emotions, and faithfulness expressed by the psalmist. Equally important in the service are the silences, opportunities to meditate on texts or on the silence itself.

You may participate in this cycle of prayer and silence either by chanting in the Schola or by attending as a congregant and listening with intention. You are most welcome to enter the service in either way.

If you would like to consider joining the Women’s Schola, please contact  Mim Warden.

Although previous choral experience is desirable, the directors are willing to teach chanting to persons who have not sung before.

Eucharistic Service in the Roman Catholic Tradition

Sundays, 8:30 p.m.

On Sunday nights during the academic year there will be a Eucharistic service in Lampman Chapel in the Catholic tradition. We begin at 8:30 p.m. sharp. Everyone is welcome at this liturgy where the readings of the lectionary are read and we talk about them, a Eucharistic prayer is read and a communion service follows. Please join us at any given Sunday during the semester. The service is a quiet and reflective time before the beginning of the week.
