Dean Machado Takes Office
Union Welcomes Drs. Dube, Harrison, Mayfield, Munteanu, Smith


Union is delighted to announce that Professor of Church History the Rev. Dr. Daisy Machado will be installed as our new Dean of Academic Affairs. Union also welcomes Dr. Musa W. Dube, Dr. Kelby Harrison, Dr. Tyler Mayfield, Dr. habil. Daniel Munteanu, and Dr. Dennis Smith to the Seminary faculty for the 2010-11 academic year.


Daisy Machado

Dean of Academic Affairs
Professor of Church History

The Rev. Dr. Daisy Machado began her appointment as Dean of Academic Affairs on July 1, 2010 with her formal installation scheduled to coincide with the 2010 Convocation Ceremony. An M.Div. alumna of Union, the Rev. Dr. Machado is the first U.S. Latina ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She continues as Professor of Church History in addition to her new responsibilities as Dean of Academic Affairs.

Musa W. Dube

Visiting Professor in Religious Studies

Prof. Musa W. Dube is an Associate Professor at the University of Botswana, where she has taught Biblical Studies in the Dept. of Theology and Religious Studies. Dr. Dube has also served as a HIV/AIDS and theological consultant for churches and theological institutions of Africa, training theological lecturers and church leaders to mainstream HIV/AIDS and gender issues in their programs. Her research and writing is focused on postcolonial feminist interpretations of the Bible, which explores feminist ways of reading the Bible without colonizing the other.


Kelby Harrison

Post-Doctoral Fellow in Social Ethics

Dr. Kelby Harrison comes to Union from Northwestern University in Chicago, where she wrote her doctoral dissertation titled "The Ethics of Passing: a Theoretical and Practical Analysis". Her teaching interests include virtue ethics, constructive ethics, queer liberation theology and the effects of oppression on practical morality.

Tyler Mayfield

Post-Doctoral Fellow and Instructor in Biblical Languages

Dr. Tyler Mayfield joins the Union community as Post-Doctoral Fellow and Biblical Languages Instructor. He earned his M.A.R. in Bible at Yale Divinity School in 2005 and his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible at Claremont Graduate University in 2009. During his doctoral studies, he worked as a Research Associate at the Ancient Biblical Manuscript Center at the Claremont School of Theology. Before joining Union's faculty, Dr. Mayfield served as a Lecturer at the University of California, Riverside, where he taught courses in the Christian Bible, the Hebrew Bible, and Jesus and the Gospels. He also taught prophetic literature as an adjunct faculty member at the Claremont School of Theology.

Daniel Munteanu

Bonhoeffer Exchange Teaching Scholar

Dr. theol., Dr. habil. Daniel Munteanu will visit Union during the Fall 2010 semester as the Bonhoeffer Exchange Teaching Scholar, a program that has brought several young German theologians to teach at Union in recent years. He is an Assistant Professor at Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg Germany, Delegate in Ecumenical Issues of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolitan Bishop of Germany and Central Europe, and 2007 winner of the John Templeton Award for Theological Promise.

Dennis E. Smith

Visiting Professor of New Testament

Dr. Smith specializes in the study of the social world of early Christianity and is a recognized authority on ancient Greco-Roman meal customs. A longtime student of Greek and Roman archeology, he recently participated in a research seminars in Turkey, Italy, and Israel. In his teaching he emphasizes interpreting the New Testament in its ancient context and creatively and effectively applying that interpretation to the needs of the church in the twenty-first century.
