Master of Divinity & Master of Science in Social Work  (M.Div & M.S.S.W.)

Union Theological Seminary has a collaborative relationship with the Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW) to offer a joint program: the Master of Divinity/Master of Science in Social Work (M.Div./M.S.S.W).

The M.Div./M.S.S.W. program is pursued by those with plans to seek vocations within traditional church ministries, or those considering careers in the helping professions outside church. Candidates can complete requirements for both degrees in one four-year program. Candidates are required to apply and gain admission to both the Seminary and the Columbia School of Social Work. Application to both, the Seminary and the CSSW, can be made concurrently or in the student’s first year in the M.Div. program.  In order to be considered a dual-degree student, the student must have been admitted to CSSW before the second year.

The M.Div./M.S.S.W. program permits qualified students to earn the two degrees in less time and at less expense than pursuing such degrees separately. Students begin their studies at the Seminary by concentrating on fulfilling the basic distribution requirements of the M.Div. Beginning in the third year, the student’s work is mainly at the Columbia School of Social Work, with some courses taken at the Seminary. The requirements for the M.Div. are set by the Seminary, and the requirements for the Master of Science in Social Work are set by the CSSW. In effect, some of the electives normally necessary in each program are satisfied by the whole body of work completed in the other program. Continuous registration at the Seminary is required until the two degrees are conferred. They are awarded concurrently by the Seminary and the CSSW after the requirements of both programs are met. More information and applications for admission may be obtained by writing to the Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at the Seminary and to the director of admissions of the Columbia University School of Social Work.
