Alumna Joy Bussert Writes to Beck
The Rev. Dr. Joy Bussert '99, '02, in her capacity as Interim Pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Montgomery, Minnesota sent Beck a letter and a copy of the New Oxford Annotated Bible. Read her letter (PDF).
Dear Serene,
Your friends and colleagues at New Brunswick Theological Seminary have followed with both interest and some puzzlement Glen Beck's attack on Liberation Theology, the work of Dr. James Cone, and the clear call of the gospel to address the deep needs of the world for justice. We have found the writings of Dr. Cone a faithful and challenging companion for our students as they are formed for transformational ministries in richly diverse communities. We certainly expect that our students will be possessed by a personal faith that inspires them, but never a private faith that insulates them from the world. Dr. Cone with many others have challenged us in creative ways to translate our personal faith into one that speaks and listens in the public square. He has also encouraged us to listen closely to the gospel as it judges the racism in our own seminary community and re-creates us for more faithful service. In a world that is deeply stained by both personal and corporate sins, any other kind of faith becomes quickly irrelevant and even worse, a way for us to escape. You and your community of faith and learning remain very much in our thoughts and prayers as you continue to speak honestly, perceptively and courageously to a world hungry for real hope and thirsty for God's grace.
