The Book of Common Prayer has been described by Prof Alec Ryrie as a ‘Bible delivery system’. This paper will explore the relationship between the Bible and its use in worship. The public reading of the vernacular Bible in church was certainly “managed”. However, some contemporaries also assigned theological importance to hearing the Bible aloud in this public and corporate context, as opposed to the reading of it individually or within the household.
