Fourth Annual Forrest Church Memorial Lecture

Mon, 3 Feb, 2014 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Catherine KellerPlease join us for the Fourth Annual Forrest Church Memorial Lecture at Union Theological Seminary. This annual series honors The Rev. Dr. Forrest Church and his extraordinary legacy of leadership in liberal religion, public life, Unitarian Universalist studies and American religious history.

Dr. Catherine Keller, a Professor of Constructive Theology at the Theological School of Drew University will be this year’s speaker. In her teaching, lecturing and writing, Dr. Keller develops the relational potential of a theology of becoming. Her books reconfigure ancient symbols of divinity for the sake of a planetary conviviality—a life together, across vast webs of difference. Learn more about Catherine Keller>>

Dr. Katherine Keller will speak on Woe, Woe—Whoa! Eco-theological Uncertainty and Planetary Entanglement.

A sturdy tradition of eco-social justice has been fostered by liberal/progressive religion.   But our planetary precarity only increases.  The apocalyptic warning—woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth—rings ever more true in our century.  The economic drivers of global warming are sealed with the political force of a transnational empire. How can theology help to shift public sensibility? This paper  explores an ancient civilizational complex, produced by a breach that runs through us all.   It is not diagnosed by false certainty—of faith or science. As we learn to embrace our precarous interdependence, however, we may form more effectual alliances. Can a theology of entangled difference—teaching an inter-carnation of  our full and conflicted spectrum of   gender/sex/race/class/species relations—make a planetary difference?
