WRITING A 21st CENTURY SOUNDTRACK FOR A REVOLUTION – MOVIE SCREENING AND VISUAL ART & SONGWRITING WORKSHOP

Fri, 31 Jan, 2014 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Soundtrack-for-a-revolution

Join us for a screening of the documentary, Soundtrack for a Revolution, and reflect on the music that inspired Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement. The goal of this event is to provide an outlet for creative expression and reflection on Dr. King and The Movement. Various art supplies will be provided. During and after the movie, create visual and/or musical art inspired by The Movement.** Instead of the “usual” debriefing session after the movie, we will discuss the following questions and work to create music for the revolution today!

          1. What is the revolution today?
          2. Given today's more nuanced racism and discrimination, when we sing 'We shall overcome,' what are we asking to overcome?
          3. What are the issues we are fighting?
          4. What might the songs that address these problems sound like?

**OPTIONAL: Given the artist's consent, any art piece created at this event is eligible to be displayed at various locations on campus, to share with the whole community!

Hosted by: Office of Institutional Diversity and Community Engagement, Arts Caucus, and the Black Caucus
