Art at Union makes its presence felt poinantly in April and May with the following moving painting and sculpture exhibits, dealing with issues of war, social change and self-understanding.


The War Series
An Installation of Sculpture by Thomas Faulkner

April 7 - May 16
Opening Reception, May 10, 2008
7 - 9 p.m. - James Chapel

 

From April 7 to May 16, 2008, artist Thomas Faulkner will install a series of sculptures throughout Union Theological Seminary responding to the horrors of war - particularly the ongoing war in Iraq.

 

Placed in public spaces throughout the Seminary's campus, Faulkner's work confronts the challenging issues of violence, torture, and the legacy of suffering from continuing conflicts.

Nude Truths
An Exhibit of 24 Paintings in Conjunction with McLaren Conference

Beginning April 21
Opening Reception, May 3, 2008
5:00-7:00 p.m. - James Chapel

 

In collaboration with author Brian McLaren's "Everything Must Change" tour, Union Theological Seminary and the young adults at Marble Collegiate Church will host an exhibit of 24 paintings to be presented from April 21, 2008 in James Memorial Chapel. This exhibit, used in journal form during the conferences, consists of texts by Mary Ylvisaker Nilsen and paintings by Kristi Ylvisaker.


Both of the artists and Mr. McLaren will be present at an opening reception, to be held on May 3, 2008, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Musician Traci Howe will perform songs from The Revolution of Hope, from 6:00-6:30 p.m. Mr. McLaren will be available for informal conversation and book signing.

Enough Self to Speak
Master's Thesis Exhibition by
Robert Brunson and Tallu Scott Schuyler

March 29 - April 16, 2008
Reception: Saturday, March 29
6:00-9:00 p.m. - James Chapel

Tallu Schuyler's artist book tells a story about learning to recognize herself, listen to herself, speak to herself and love herself. Robert Brunson's series of paintings on canvas explore a personal journey to find a voice and to make that voice known.
