Financial Aid
Union offers a variety of financial aid programs to ensure that all eligible students may have the opportunity to attend the Seminary regardless of financial circumstances. Most aid is awarded on the basis of financial need. There are a significant number of merit based scholarships which are available.
ApplicationAll persons seeking financial aid must file the Union Application for Financial Aid (downloadable as a .PDF file) and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students in joint programs with Columbia University and Teachers College should check with those schools regarding required application forms. These forms, available from the financial aid office, must be filed after January 1 of the year prior to the academic year of application.

| Need-Based Financial AidNeed-based financial aid includes grants, funds from Federal Loan Programs, Union Loans and part-time on- or off-campus Workstudy. In order to qualify for grant, scholarship, fellowship, or Workstudy assistance, students must be fully matriculated and in full-time attendance; part-time students who are enrolled at least half-time may qualify only for loans. In awarding aid, Union looks first at eligibility for need or merit based grant assistance and recommends loans and work only after grant eligibility has been determined.

Merit-Based ScholarshipsIn addition to need-based financial aid, Union Theological Seminary offers a variety of Merit-based Aid to applicants for Master's level programs. These scholarships are determined by the Admissions Office and awarded at the time of admission to the Seminary. They require no separate application. In order to be eligible for a merit-based scholarship, the Admissions application must be filed and completed no later than February 15 of the year for which one is seeking admission.
Note: Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for the federally funded loan and work programs. No aid, scholarships, and fellowships, can be awarded to students currently in default on federal loans. In order to maintain eligibility for need and merit based financial aid, students must maintain satisfactory academic progress and apply annually for financial aid.
