The Doctor of Philosophy is offered at the Seminary for students who want primarily to study aspects of the Christian tradition and Christian thought with a view to teaching in colleges or universities and seminaries, or holding positions of leadership in churches or social service and social justice agencies. The program for the Ph.D. at Union includes work for the intermediate degree of Master of Philosophy, which also must be earned at the Seminary.
Applicants must be graduates of accredited colleges. Normally they will have concentrated their undergraduate studies in some area of the liberal arts, but in any case will have established an outstanding academic record. In addition to general requirements for admission to the Seminary, applicants will have completed the degree of Master of Divinity or Master of Arts with distinction in an accredited seminary, or will have completed at least two years of distinguished graduate studies in religion and obtained a very thorough grounding in biblical, theological, and historical subjects.
The programs and concentrations for the Union Theological Seminary Ph.D. are organized into Consortia, as follows:
The Bible Consortium: Degrees in Old Testament and in New Testament involving collaboration primarily between faculty in the Bible disciplines (Old Testament and New Testament). Learn More.
The Theology Consortium: Involving collaboration primarily between faculty in Theology, Ethics, and Church History.
The Practical Theology Consortium: Ph.D. programs of study in this consortium shall have a focus in one of the disciplines of the consortium – Preaching, Psychiatry and Religion, Religion and Education, Religion and Society, or Worship – and shall involve collaboration with some members of either the Bible or Theology consortia or with another of the Practical Theology disciplines. For example, a student might major in Psychiatry and Religion in collaboration with Old Testament, or major in Preaching in collaboration with Worship. Students should contact faculty in specific disciplines of interest, as indicated. Learn More.
Complete applications for admission to the Union Ph.D. program must be made before January 6 for entrance in the following fall semester. The number of candidates who can be admitted is strictly limited. Late applications and incomplete applications will not be considered, nor will these be returned to the sender. Studies begin only in September.
