Master of Divinity/Master of Science in Social Work

Some students plan careers in which they would be well served by professional training in both divinity studies and social work. It has long been true of Union Theological Seminary that a number of its graduates choose careers of ministry in the helping professions outside the church. Many students seeking vocations within traditional church ministries see distinct advantages to having social work training and credentials in addition to a theological education. To provide an opportunity to combine these studies in New York City, Union Seminary and the Columbia University School of Social Work have a collaborative arrangement under which students complete the M.Div. and the Master of Science in Social Work in one four-year program. Qualified students are able by this arrangement to earn the two degrees in less time and at less expense than would ordinarily be possible if the two programs were pursued separately.

To enter this special program, application to and acceptance for admission to candidacy by both the Seminary and the Columbia School of Social Work is required. Students begin at the Seminary by concentrating on fulfilling the basic distribution requirements of the M.Div. Beginning in the third year, the student’s work is mainly at the School of Social Work with some courses taken at the Seminary. The requirements for the M.Div. are set by the Seminary, and the requirements for the Master of Science in Social Work are set by the Columbia University School of Social Work. In effect, some of the electives normally necessary in each program are satisfied by the whole body of work completed in the other program. Continuous registration at the Seminary is required until the two degrees are conferred. They are awarded concurrently by the Seminary and Columbia University after the requirements of both programs are met. More information and applications for admission may be obtained by writing to the director of admissions at the Seminary and to the director of admissions of the Columbia University School of Social Work.

For dual degree candidates combining studies for the M.Div. with studies for the M.S. in Social Work, the M.Div. requirements are modified only as follows:

  • The candidate must complete the regular core course requirements of the M.Div. program. (36 pts)

  • The field education requirement is reduced to two points, to be earned in a seminar connecting the student's field work in the social work program with the candidate's theological studies: CS 331 Concurrent Integrative Seminar. CS 331 is usually taken in the third or fourth year.

  • The electives requirement is reduced to 21 points, in recognition of the 45 points of work required by the School of Social Work. The 21 elective points, along with the Social Work courses, will constitute the Ministry and Social Work program focus.

  • There is no thesis requirement.

  • A candidate in this special program may not enroll for R credit in courses taken at the Seminary to meet the M.Div. requirements.

  • The candidate will be subject to four semesters of full-time tuition (i.e., four full tuition units) at the Seminary, instead of the usual six required for the regular M.Div. program. The candidate is required, however, to register at the Seminary in every term he or she is registered as a candidate in the School of Social Work.
