Union Theological Seminary historically has been and remains committed to an intellectual analysis of the claims of faith that is robust, sincere, and of the highest academic quality. The theological disciplines as practiced here take seriously the realities of the world beyond the Seminary. They engage with the challenges posed to faith by secular thought, religious diversity, and the global human experience.
Through our academic programs, we are also committed to a moral response to the challenges the world poses to Christian ethical standards and values, affirming the principle that the God's love does not discriminate based on race, gender, sexuality, disability status, wealth or any other characteristic. Our pedagogy therefore embraces a radical critique of systems of injustice that violate this principle.
Our academic programs also seek to reap the benefit of the special opportunities and challenges that arise from our location in New York City, responding creatively to the challenges of a diverse, dynamic global metropolis characterized by extremes of wealth and poverty, inclusion and exclusion.
Degrees
The primary focus of the academic program is on the delivery of a strong, well-focused Master of Divinity degree program that seeks to balance the Seminary's core values with the diverse experiences and needs of its students.
Union also offers a range of degrees that focus on academic theological instruction at the post-baccalaureate and higher levels. The Master of Arts program provides theological education from a perspective that is faith- and values-based, but is essentially academic rather than vocational. Many M.A. students progress to or aspire towards Ph.D. study after graduation. Some enter the M.A. as part of a discernment process and discover the potential for ordained ministry, and transfer to the M.Div. Others choose this degree because their vocational/career plans do not include public ordained ministry in any form.
The Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) degree offers an opportunity for a relatively open structure of advanced theological study for those who already have theological degrees. At Union this degree has been particularly valuable in bringing a wide range of international students to the campus.
The Union Ph.D. as reconceived provides for the admission of a select group of graduate students to one of three programs each year. The program is highly competitive and is focused on attracting those candidates who can best benefit from the particular opportunities Union offers.
Burke Library
Union was developed by its faculty and donors over the past century and more into a "theological university", and was accordingly equipped with one of the greatest theological libraries of the western hemisphere. This astonishing resource at one time risked slipping beyond the Seminary's means to maintain appropriately. Now, thanks to an imaginative and unique management agreement with Columbia University, the library collection remains substantially on Union's campus while being owned and maintained by one of the nation's largest university library systems. The seminary also has access to all the physical and virtual resources of an Ivy League university a few blocks away from our campus.
