James J. Kempster

Director of Communications

James Kempster joined Union's Development Department in October 2006 and immediately led the Seminary through the development and implementation of, what was then, a new, more robust, user-based Web site. He has since produced Union's new magazine Union Now, created Union's blog program Union:inDialogue, introduced the use of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, spearheaded the expansion of the Union podcast program to iTunes University, and redesigned the Seminary's advertising and print publications. He has also worked closely with Union's media relations consultants to develop an online resource for the press.

He earned a Masters of Divinity and a Masters of Theology (Theology and the Arts) from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, California (Graduate Theological Union), where he also student-taught worship and preaching. Additionally, he holds a Masters of Fine Arts in painting from the School of Visual Arts, New York.

Previously, Mr. Kempster was Web Developer for Brooklyn Law School where he was also on the rebranding committee, and Assistant Director of Development and Director of Publications at The Town School in Manhattan, where he was also Computer Curriculum Coordinator and Teacher and served on the faculty advisory committee to the Board of Trustees. He also previously headed the Fine Arts Department at DeSmet Jesuit High School in Saint Louis, Missouri, where he taught studio art and theater. He has freelanced extensively as an illustrator and designer for print, and has designed and managed commercial Web sites. His paintings and photography have been exhibited in New York, California, and St. Louis, where his "deconstructed" Stations of the Cross are permanently installed in the main chapel of DeSmet High School. Mr. Kempster has lived in New York's Greenwich Village for 20 years with his partner Robert Loncar.
